The Team Behind Hitler's Photo Album

The photograph shows Jack Hammond and Ingrid Stein. Like many of the people working for PWE, they were colourful characters. Hammond was a journalist working for a local newspaper in the Midlands who, in his spare time, wrote pornographic novels. These had been published in Paris before the war and smuggled into England. Sefton Delmer, a fellow journalist who had been recruited to organize PWE's black propaganda, was a fan of  Hammond's books. And when Delmer discovered that Hammond was serving in the RAF, he arranged to have him transferred to the Political Warfare Executive.

Stein was a talented, if mercurial, Austrian graphic artist who had come over to England when Hitler came to power. A lesbian, she was reputed to have had a torrid love affair with the wife of one of PWE's chief executives.

Hitler Replaces Jesus!

As the photo reveals, Hitler's planned to have this image replace the traditional one in all German churches.

Rommel Has Been A Naughty Boy!

For failing to stop the Allied invasion, Rommel had his Mercedes staff car taken away and replaced by a pedal car made from old bicycle wheels and cardboard boxes.

Fragile Panzers!

In this photograph Hitler reveals that the construction of his tanks was often shoddy. This tank's gun has snapped after striking the branch of a tree.

The Stress Of War!

This photograph reveals the stress on the Eastern Front. The soldier on the right has suffered a mental breakdown and can't stop giving the Nazi salute. Consequently his comrades have no option but to shoot him!

Hitler's Army Cleaning Windows In Jersey!

This photo from the album was supposed to show that in the occupied territories, Hitler's soldiers were always ready to help the civilian population. Here we see men serving in the Channel Islands hard at work in Jersey.

Hitler Enjoys A Joke!

This photograph was intended to show that Hitler had a sense of humour. In the album Hitler explains that the paper bag belonged to Eva Braun who put it over his head every time they made love.
