The photograph shows Jack Hammond and Ingrid Stein. Like many of the people working for PWE, they were colourful characters. Hammond was a journalist working for a local newspaper in the Midlands who, in his spare time, wrote pornographic novels. These had been published in Paris before the war and smuggled into England. Sefton Delmer, a fellow journalist who had been recruited to organize PWE's black propaganda, was a fan of Hammond's books. And when Delmer discovered that Hammond was serving in the RAF, he arranged to have him transferred to the Political Warfare Executive.
Stein was a talented, if mercurial, Austrian graphic artist who had come over to England when Hitler came to power. A lesbian, she was reputed to have had a torrid love affair with the wife of one of PWE's chief executives.
